A spirometry test can help diagnose the severity of many respiratory diseases.<\/li>\n<li>This technique is performed at the Laboratory of Respiratory Function of the Polyclinic of Pham Ngoc Thach University of Medicine.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-9553\" src=\"https:\/\/phongkhamdaihocypnt.edu.vn\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/word-image-8.jpeg\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>When should a spirometry test be indicated? <\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong><em>For diagnosing: In patients with abnormal clinical symptoms and abnormal test results:<\/em><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ul>\n<li>Clinical symptoms:\n<ul>\n<li>Shortness of breath<\/li>\n<li>Wheezing<\/li>\n<li>Sitting to relieve breathlessness<\/li>\n<li>Difficulty in expiratory<\/li>\n<li>Chronic cough with or without sputum<\/li>\n<li>Chest abnormality<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Subclinical tests:\n<ul>\n<li>Hypoxemia<\/li>\n<li>Increase in blood CO2<\/li>\n<li>Polycythemia vera<\/li>\n<li>Abnormal chest X-ray<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><em>b<\/em><\/strong><em>. <\/em><strong><em>For monitoring the progression of disease, evaluating the response to treatment: In patients with bronchial asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), restrictive lung disease.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>c. For screening: In patients who have following risk factors: <\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Smoking<\/li>\n<li>Working in a place with smoke and exhausted fumes such as chemical toxics,&#8230;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><em>d. For pre-workout health assessment<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Contraindications: <\/strong>People with following factors are <strong><em>not allowed to <\/em><\/strong>have a spirometry test:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Acute inflammation of the respiratory tract.<\/li>\n<li>Coughing up blood for unknown reasons.<\/li>\n<li>Aneurysm of the thoracic aorta and\/or the abdominal aorta.<\/li>\n<li>Recent exacerbation of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) or asthma <strong>for less than 6 weeks <\/strong>before the test<strong>.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Having myocardial infarction, eye surgery, abdomen, chest surgery<strong> for less than 3-6 months <\/strong>before the test<strong>. <\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Chest pain, with unknown diagnosis.<\/li>\n<li>Having unstable angina <strong>for less than 24 hours<\/strong> before the test.<\/li>\n<li>Having progressive pulmonary tuberculosis<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>What should be done to prepare before a spirometry test? <\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><em>Wearing loose-fitting clothes. <\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>No smoking for 1 hour <\/em>before the test<em>. <\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>No alcohol drinking for 4 hours <\/em>before the test<\/li>\n<li><em>No hard exercise for 30 minutes <\/em>before the test<\/li>\n<li><em>No full meal eating for 2 hours <\/em>before the test<\/li>\n<li><em>Some notices for patients who have spirometry for the first time diagnosis: <\/em><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ul>\n<li><em>Do not use bronchodilators before the test (for at least 6 hours with short-acting; 12 hours with long-acting; 24 hours with an oral pill such as theophylline.)<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Source: MSc.
